What You Need to Know About the California RBS Certification Exam and How to Prepare

Assembly Bill 1221 enacted the legal requirement of the California RBS Alcohol Server Certification. This mandatory certification is in effect for all alcohol managers and servers with various alcohol-related work responsibilities in on-premises establishments. Anyone tasked with checking IDs, taking drink orders, pouring, serving, and delivering alcoholic beverages to customers must be correctly trained and obtain this certification. 

Whether you’re a bartender or starting out as a server, you’ll need to pass the RBS Certification Exam by law in the state of California. There are many resources online to help you prepare for your training and exam. Select an approved training course to begin your study. Once you’ve found the right program, register and pay the initial fee to access the materials. You’ll receive an ID for use as a server for the duration of your learning. Choose Your California RBS Training Program. 

Before beginning your studies, choose a qualifying program, create your server account on the portal, and pay the initiation fee. You’ll receive a server ID number for your California RBS training. Qualifying programs are noted as ABC-approved. You can find these options online and complete your training from home. 

Complete Your Training Course.

As you move through the course, you’ll learn about the importance of various prevention tactics about overserving and alcohol-related liabilities. Work through the California RBS training course at your own pace. Some topics you’ll cover include:

  • Public safety awareness and responsibilities 
  • Best approaches to safe alcohol services

Take The Exam.

When you’re ready, go back to the course portal and begin your exam. The exam typically takes about 2 hours. The exam is not timed, and you may take breaks as needed. You must finish your exam within 30 days of completing your California RBS training and get a 70% or higher to pass and receive your certification. You must also meet the 60-day certification period requirement to obtain your certification.

Get Your Certification. 

Once you pass, you can download your certificate via the portal. You must provide your server ID number to your employer for proof that you’ve obtained RBS certification. Keep in mind that your certification will last three years. You must renew your RBS certification before the active period ends to remain compliant.
